The leaves are falling, and the turkey is practically in the oven. Yes, according to the calendar, it’s time to take stock and give thanks. So that’s precisely what we’re doing by talking to the actors and filmmakers that made 2008 a memorable year at the movies — a year filled with self-loathing kick-ass superheroes, Manolo-wearing women and the return of a very familiar man in a hat.

How does a TV series 10 years past its premiere and four years past its final episode become the film event of the year for virtually every woman in the country? Credit Sarah Jessica Parker and “Sex and the City” writer/director Michael Patrick King. After a series of false starts and an abandoned script meant to film immediately after the conclusion of the HBO series, “Sex and the City” returned triumphantly to the forefront of popular culture thanks to a film that broke box-office records right from the start: biggest romantic-comedy opening of all time, biggest R-rated opening of all time and biggest opening for any film starring a woman, to rattle off just a few of the impressive feats.

MTV News looked back with that very woman, Sarah Jessica Parker, for an exclusive conversation about the year that was 2008 and to get a sneak peak at the plans for a “Sex and the City” sequel.

MTV: The release and excitement surrounding “Sex and the City” felt more like an event on the scale of a superhero flick than a romantic comedy.

Sarah Jessica Parker: The one thing I regret is I never roamed around Manhattan and saw it [with the crowds]. I was too embarrassed about getting caught. I was afraid it would look like I was gloating. I do regret not seeing all those ladies — and some men — dressed up in their finery. But it was thrilling to hear about.

Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker are reportedly in negotiations to star in a romantic comedy for Columbia Pictures.

According to Variety, the untitled project comes from writer-director Marc Lawrence, who previously worked with Grant on “Music and Lyrics” and “Two Weeks Notice.”

The trade paper says Lawrence’s script focuses on an estranged New York couple who have to relocate to Wyoming after they witness a murder and enter the witness protection program. The project was originally titled “Buffalo Faith,” but that may no longer be the case.

Columbia, which picked up the project in turnaround from Castle Rock Entertainment, is hoping for a March production start date.

A sequel in the works? What do you think about this?

Get ready for more cosmos and screaming women! After months of idle talk, HBO has confirmed that a sequel to the Sex and the City movie is in the early stages of development — no surprise, considering the first spin-off from the series has earned $146 million since it debuted in theaters at the end of May. Michael Lombardo, president of HBO’s programming group, told a group of reporters at the cable network’s annual press tour in Los Angeles today, “We’re really heartened by the fans’ enthusiasm. Absolutely, there is a lot of energy behind doing another SATC movie.” Lombardo wouldn’t expound on his comments but a source confirmed that Warner Bros. has begun discussions on a sequel, adding that the studio is hoping to fast-track the project. However, no deal is in place and there is no script. In fact, the lead actresses involved are taking a cautious attitude towards another film, not wanting to rush a sequel and risk disappointing their loyal fans. Warner Bros. hasn’t returned calls seeking comment.

The actress who never met a funny hat she didn’t like is in talks to star in The Ivy Chronicles, a dramedy about a single gal making her way in New York.

If that sounds a little too familiar, this time around Parker would play newly divorced mom Ivy Ames, who loses her high-powered job and has to give up her uptown digs for an apartment more suited to…well, someone like Carrie Bradshaw.

Eventually, she totally rocks her new life in ways meant to both dazzle and inspire the largely female audience this film will be seeking.
